Step Away from the Screen & Look at the Page
I don’t know about you, but lately I feel like my eyeballs have become permanent residents of Screen City. It’s high time we step away from screens. Laptop screen, phone screen, TV screen… repeat. It’s like living inside a digital snow globe where the flakes never stop falling. Sometimes, stepping away from screens is the best way to regain clarity.
But here’s the thing: as much as I love the convenience of tech, my brain doesn’t reset in front of a glowing rectangle. It resets when I flip open a notebook. There’s something about the quiet of the page that the noise of a screen can’t touch. You really notice the difference when you step away from screens and focus on something tangible.

When I step away from scrolling and start scribbling, a few things happen:
- My focus comes back. On paper, there are no notifications popping up, no ads begging for attention, no endless tabs multiplying like rabbits. Just me, a pen, and a thought.
- My creativity wakes up. There’s science behind this—writing by hand lights up different parts of the brain than typing does. But honestly, I don’t need research to tell me. I feel it. The page nudges me to make connections I wouldn’t have made on a keyboard.
- I breathe easier. Somehow, the act of slowing down enough to write by hand reminds my whole body to unclench. The words might come out messy, but the calm they bring is pure gold. Stepping away from screens brings a breath of fresh air.
Don’t get me wrong—I’m not giving up my screens. I’m writing this on one, after all. But when I balance the glow of the screen with the quiet of the page, my days feel less like a blur and more like a story I actually want to live.
So maybe today, instead of another doom scroll, give your thumb a break and pick up a pen. Open a journal, a planner, even the back of an envelope if that’s all you’ve got. Stepping away from the screens can reinvigorate your creativity. Your brain will thank you. Your story will thank you. And hey—your eyes will probably thank you, too.
