Showing Up for the Stories That Matter

The other night, I got to do something I love almost as much as cracking open a brand-new journal. I showed up for a friend’s book launch to celebrate stories that matter.

There’s something about being in a room where words take center stage. You witness someone you know pouring their heart into pages. They spent late nights and consumed probably a few too many cups of coffee. These pages are finally being released into the world. It’s like watching a dream materialize, one chapter at a time. It’s magical. Something created from nothing but the thoughts in someone’s head.

G. Riley Mills (L), Yours Truly (R), from his previous book launch, because like an idiot, I forgot to get a pic with him for the current one.

Showing up matters–even if you don’t have any photographic evidence! Whether it’s for a book launch or a reading, our presence is part of the story. Even for a casual “come have a drink while I celebrate finishing a draft,” being there matters. It says: I see you. I believe in you. I’m here for this next plot twist.

And honestly, it reminded me why I do what I do at Twisted Plot Paper. Every blank page is a little launchpad. We don’t all need a bookstore full of people and a microphone to celebrate our stories. Sometimes the celebration is just sitting down with your journal. It can mean scribbling out the messy truth or sketching the outline of the story you’ll tell someday.

So yes, I clapped, I hugged, I maybe even got a little misty-eyed. Because when we show up for each other’s stories, we’re also reminded to keep writing our own.

✨ What story are you showing up for today—your friend’s, or your own?

When I got home later that night, I wrote all about it in The Starring Me! Journal so I didn’t forget a thing. It’s a memory I will want to treasure and re-live once in a while.

Congrats, Gary!
