The Ink That Calms Me
When my brain feels like a browser with 27 tabs open… I grab a pen.
Sometimes I catch myself holding my breath without realizing it. Or spinning in my own thoughts like I’m trying to solve a problem that doesn’t have an answer. Anxiety, for me, doesn’t always show up in neon. It’s quieter. It hums under the surface. When it really demands my attention, it finds a way to grab me from within and holds my mind’s eye up to all the darkness that exists in the world. It’s momentarily overwhelming. In the grip of anxiety, a moment is a never-ending eternity. But I’ve learned that when that hum gets too loud, there’s one thing that almost always brings the volume down: putting pen to paper.
Handwriting slows me down. In the best way. It’s not like typing—there’s no backspace, no red squiggles judging my spelling. Just me, the page, and whatever is tumbling out of my brain in whatever color ink I fancy at the moment. And here’s the magic part: when I write things down, they stop swirling around. They have somewhere to go. A landing place. A home. And suddenly, I feel a little more like myself again.

There’s something about the physical act of writing that grounds me. The feel of the paper, the scratch of the pen. It reminds me I’m real. That I’m here. That I don’t need to have it all figured out—I just need to keep the ink flowing.
That’s why I’m so excited to share what’s coming in October: The 90-Day Write On! Challenge—a low-pressure, personally high-reward commitment to get into the habit of handwriting every day. Whether it’s two sentences or two pages, it’s about showing up for yourself. We’ll kick it off on October 1, and I’ll be sharing all the juicy details in September. I’ll be using The Write Track Planner for this because it’s exactly why I created it: to help build the habit and ground us as our writing utensil of choice acts as a bridge—a root—that stabilizes and nourishes us.
If you’re feeling untethered, anxious, or just overwhelmed by the noise of the world, I invite you to try putting pen to paper. It doesn’t have to be profound. It just has to be honest.
More soon. But for now… write on.
