Ink & Artifacts: Unearthing A Life in Handwriting
When I page through my old handwritten journals, it feels less like reading and more like excavating. Each journal or notebook is a dig site, each entry a shard of pottery, a fragment of who I once was–sometimes with indications of who I was becoming. Some days, I was scribbling like my pen was trying to keep up with a stampede of thoughts. Other days, my handwriting looked neat, careful, even ceremonial—like the act of writing was just as important as the words themselves.

The fascinating part isn’t just what I wrote in those handwritten journals, but how I wrote it. My handwriting has moods. It slants differently depending on whether I was tired, anxious, or buzzing with ideas. There are pages where the ink is pressed so deeply into the paper you can feel the imprint on the back. Others are so light it’s like I wasn’t sure the words deserved to stay.
Typing on a screen could never reveal all that. A font doesn’t tell you if the person behind the words was rushing, crying, or laughing. But handwriting does. It’s evidence. It’s archaeology. It’s me, leaving behind artifacts for my future self to stumble upon.
And here’s the quiet magic of handwritten journals: every time I dig back into an old journal, I learn something new about the person I was—and the person I’m still becoming. That’s why I keep writing by hand. Not just for now, but for later.

Because someday, your handwriting will be more than ink on paper. It’ll be an artifact of your life.
